Flight Lieutenant Helen Greaves

Commanding Officer

I am the Officer Commanding at 1084 (Market Harborough) Sqn, where I was a cadet from 2003 to 2010. I left as a Cadet Flight Sergeant before returning as staff in 2015 after graduating with a degree in English Literature, Language, Philosophy and Ethics from Oxford Brookes University. It was really important for me to be able to return to the squadron and ensure that the fantastic experiences that I enjoyed as a cadet, continue to be delivered to the next generation. Some of my favourite memories of that time are visits to Disneyland Paris as part of the squadron band leading the Disney parade, the Royal International Air Tattoo, annual Battlefield Tours of Belgium, attending the Menin Gate Ceremony, and camps at RAF Kinloss, RAF Stafford and RAF Wittering.

Now I command Market Harborough Squadron, I'm Directing Staff with the South and East Midlands Cadet Development Training Team, acting as Deputy Campsite Manager (Build) for the cadet contingent at RIAT and I'm just starting to undertake a new role assisting the S&E Midlands Wing Safeguarding Officer in delivering safeguarding training.

In my ‘Spare Time’ I am a full-time Business Manager for a Chartered Surveying and Premium Estate Agency practice, negotiating contracts, dealing in high end property and overseeing the HR and Health and Safety within the business.

RAFAC Highlight

My career highlight so far has to be a First Aid incident my staff team and I were involved in during 2022. A fellow officer and I performed CPR on a young footballer who had collapsed taking over from a young member of the football club, whilst Sgt Patrick Evans, who is also part of my team and currently a Trainee Paramedic, performed observations and ventillated the young man before using a defibrillator to bring him back to life, with another member of my team helping with crowd control. Our training within the Air Cadets gave us the confidence to deal with an emergency situation effectively and calmly, and the wider community has since expressed an interest in First Aid training after seeing our response. We are very proud and humbled to have been awarded a Royal Humane Society Resuscitation Certificate for our endeavours, which was presented to us by the Lord Lieutenant of Leicestershire, Mike Kapur OBE BSc (Hons) ACA FRSA.

"Having been a cadet at Market Harborough Squadron, I moved on to assist in the setup and running of 2600 Rothwell Squadron, I finished my cadet career at 422 Corby Squadron.
I then returned to Rothwell as a uniformed member of staff, as the Squadron Warrant Officer for a few years before leaving the organisation.

Introducing my son to the Air Cadets nearly 19 years later, I was encouraged to rejoin the Squadron as a Civilian Instructor to bring my knowledge and experiences to our members.
I'm a qualified electro-mechanical engineer and ex-Special Constable with many hobbies that gives me a broad basis to inspire todays cadets.

The ATC sparked several interests that I have built on and still do today.
I regularly enjoy clay pigeon shooting, I'm a keen drummer and I am a radio amatuer.
My avaiation interests stretched to flying my own paramotor that I will have to revisit one day."
